Varanger and Ekker Island is a paradise for birdwatchers, with a unique Arctic birdlife that attracts enthusiasts from around the world. You have views of thousands of kittiwakes, and occasionally, you may spot the rare gyrfalcon or larger groups of sea eagles from our Bird View Apartments.

Some of the birds you can spot here in Varanger include the Steller's eider, king eider, ruff, common redshank, Siberian tit, Arctic redpoll, three-toed woodpecker, white-tailed eagle, and golden eagle.

Varanger Is A World-Class Birdwatching Destination

The unique waders are a must-see, making the Varangerfjord the perfect start to the day. The wide, and in some places shallow, fjord provides a bustling birdlife, as food is easily accessible.

The birds of prey in Varanger catch the eye of most visitors, bird enthusiasts or not. You can't miss the majestic white-tailed eagle that resides along the fjord and regularly flies over the road. Other birds of prey that are easy to spot along the Varanger National Tourist Route include the golden eagle, merlin, kestrel, and rough-legged buzzard. As you approach the birch forests, keep an eye out, and if you're lucky, you might spot the northern hawk-owl. The more common short-eared owl is often seen along the road as it hunts in open landscapes.

Hornøya – A Highlight
