Nature is the most important part of a visit to Northern Norway, which is why the rooms are designed to give you spectacular views of the fjord and the surrounding landscape. We've created a place to stay that offers a close encounter with the forces of nature outside, while keeping you safe and warm.

At Ekker Island Arctic Lodge, you can choose from several types of accommodations. Our premium cabins are designed by the architectural firm Biotope, while the Emelie House has a more historical charm. We also offer two apartments with unique views, where you have the beach and sea on both sides. Saunas are available nearby for all units.

Bird View Apartments

We have four premium cabins: Snowbunting, White-tailed Eagle, Kittiwake, and Oystercatcher. These are named after the local bird species that visit Ekker Island and Varanger every spring and summer. The architectural firm Biotope has designed the buildings and rooms to harmonize with the surrounding nature, offering you an Arctic experience both indoors and outdoors. The large windows face the Varangerfjord, allowing you to enjoy the view and nature from a warm and cozy cabin. The cabins are equipped with comfortable beds, a private bathroom with shower and a fully equipped kitchen.

Please note that the Snowbunting cabin does not have a washing machine. Contact the reception if you need help with washing clothes.

The Emelie House

The Emelie House is a building with historical value from 1947. It is named after Emelie, a mother of five, a teetotaler, and a deeply religious woman who lived here until 1963. Back then, there was no running water and only limited electricity, so peat was used for heating throughout the week. In “Emeliehuset”, you have your own kitchen, living room with a woodfired oven, and three bedrooms. The interior is cozy and homey. From the second floor, you have a view of the bird cliffs.

Sea Apartments

A hundred years ago, this was a house of worship where the fire-and-brimstone preacher Ole Hallesby delivered his sermons. Since 1911, it was a place where people could hear the word of God, meet familiar faces, and take a break from the otherwise strenuous life in the North. Today, we have two nearly identical apartments in the former meeting house, featuring cozy interiors and great views of the sea on both sides of the building. The apartments are located a short walk from our main area and are equipped with comfortable beds, tiled bathrooms with shower, and a fully equipped kitchen. There is also a sauna right outside the door, and just 50 meters from it, you can take a dip in the Barents Sea—a highlight for many.

The Sea Apartments are located in the orange building in the aerial photo above. Today, the building is painted brown.
